HARRISBURG — A new Pennsylvania state law is now in effect, ending the practice of suspending drivers’ licenses for those convicted of certain non-highway safety violations, including drug offenses.

Gov. Tom Wolf signed the legislation in October and it took effect Monday. In a statement, Wolf says the change removes a roadblock for someone who needs a valid driver’s license to find and keep a job, especially where public transportation isn’t readily accessible.

AMBRIDGE — Authorities have released the names of four people killed after a vehicle traveling the wrong way collided with an oncoming car in western Pennsylvania over the weekend.

The Beaver County coroner’s office identified 41-year-old Denise Feathers of Baden as the driver of a vehicle heading north in the southbound lane of Route 65 in Harmony Township.

Police said her vehicle struck a southbound sedan at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, killing 34-year-old Bryan Highfield of Ambridge, 37-year-old James Williams Jr. of Midland and 35-year-old Dana McCandless of Beaver Falls. A passenger in the sedan was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.

All four deaths were ruled accidental. State police are assisting township police in investigating the accident.
