Jobless may be at record low

February figure is best in Pgh. area

In February, Butler County's unemployment rate fell to what analysts believe might be a record low.

County level data released by Pennsylvania's Department of Labor and Industry's Center for Workforce Information and Analysis on Tuesday puts Butler County's February unemployment rate at 3.3 percent, the lowest in the Pittsburgh area and the lowest recorded figure in the county since the center began recording in 1976.

This month, the center is continuing a review of 2018 unemployment data, so that final numbers can be entered into its historical record, according to analyst Lauren Riegel.

Riegel said some of Butler County's lowest rates in 2018 may be revised to 3.3 percent, retroactively beating February's rate.

The previous lowest rate was 3.4 percent, which data currently shows was hit in both January 2019 and in May 2018. However, the center expects changes when figures are finalized.

“In Butler County, I would say it is more likely to see a possible revision that could change that,” Riegel said.

Prior to 2018, the record was 3.7 percent, hit in March 2007.

Exact rates aside, job searches in Butler County seemed particularly fruitful in February, according to the data.

Job shifts from January to February were minimal in the seven-county Pittsburgh metropolitan area, according to Riegel's Tuesday report.

Seasonal changes in such industries as education caused the change that occurred, she said, and is accounted for in the data.

“There's not a whole lot going on this month,” Riegel said.

“Jobs were down 100. That's essentially unchanged. That could be due to rounding.”
