Claypoole helps SRU softball sweep

Moniteau graduate and Slippery Rock University sophomore Cortney Claypoole helped The Rock complete a softball doubleheader sweep of visiting California (Pa.) on Tuesday.

Starting in center field in Game 2, Claypoole went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two batted in as SRU topped the Vulcans, 9-4.

California was leading the game, 2-1, when Claypoole laced a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth and The Rock never trailed again.

Chloe Sharman earned the pitching win with three strikeouts and two walks in a complete game.

The first game was much closer, with Adeline Nicholson’s single in the third inning scoring Megan Brown with the deciding run in a 2-1 victory.

Camie Shumaker fanned nine, walked four and allowed just the one run on five hits in seven innings to grab the win in the circle.

SRU improved to 10-13 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Baseball

SRU picked up its first PSAC-West victory of the season with a split of a doubleheader against Seton Hill at Krill Field at Pullman Park.

After dropping the first game, 12-7, The Rock answered with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

Freshman first baseman Colin Cain went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and two batted in to aid the win. Ray Scala added a solo home run for SRU (7-12, 1-7).

Freshman pitcher Andy McClymonds got the win after striking out four, walking one and surrendering two runs in four innings.

Butler High product Wyatt Daugherty earned the save by pitching three scoreless innings to close out the Griffins.

The Rock led the first game 7-6 after five innings before Seton Hill scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Reliever Alex Worthington shouldered the defeat, allowing three unearned runs in the final frame.
