Butler's Goettler 5th in 200-yard IM

LEWISBURG — State competitiotn has not been kind to Butler swimmer Laura Goettler.

The junior placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley during the PIAA Class 3A Championships at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium Friday night.

Goettler has four WPIAL titles to her name — three of which are in the 200 IM — but has yet to win a state race.

“It's hard to say what happened, to be honest,” Butler coach Dave Bocci said. “Sometimes at that level you just don't get the job done. It's unfortunate, it's a learning experience for her and you move on from it.”

Goettler set the Butler school record in the 200 IM two weeks ago with a time of one minute, 58.68 seconds, earning her fourth WPIAL title.

Friday, she clocked in at 2:02.24 in the finals race, while finishing first in prelims with a time of 2:00.34.

“We'll see how tomorrow goes in the 100 breaststroke and we'll see how that turns out,” Bocci added. “How you respond from something like that is probably just as important as actually doing something. Big life lesson.”

Seneca Valley swimmer Kendall Craig finished 12th in the 200 IM prelims with a time of 2:08.03, as Mars swimmer Megan Smith finished 24th, clocking in at 2:11.92.

For the boys, SV junior Owen Blazer finished seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.21, while also finishing seventh in the prelims with a time of 49.60.

“I think it was a really good swim,” SV coach Brian Blackwell said. “(Blazer) had his best time this morning in the 100 butterfly (prelims) and he's really looking forward to the 100 backstroke tomorrow and I think it's going to be one of the better swims of the meet.”

Butler swimmer Sam Deemer placed 26th in the event, clocking in at 51.99.

The boys 200 medley relay prelims saw Butler place 26th behind Sam Deemer, Alex Deemer, David Bocci, and Ben Borvendeg.

Seneca Valley finished not far behind in 28th place, lead by Jonathan Simoes, Daniel Simoes, Max Bredl, and Max Skeen.

Alex Deemer finished 17th in the 200 freestyle prelims, registering a time of 1:44.23.

David Bocci swam 1:56.05 in the 200 individual medley prelims, earning him a 24th place finish, while in the 50 freestyle, Borvendeg placed 30th, clocking in at 21.93.

Then Seneca Valley registered a time of 1:27.57 in the 200 freestyle relay prelims, which earned the Raiders a 19th-place finish.

In the girls 200 medley relay prelims, Butler finished 14th with a time of 1:48.43 behind Goettler, Abbie Griffith, Rachel Ledford, and Savannah Holt.

SV came in 20th, which was anchored by Taylor Schoeffel, Edie Sawyer, Julia Listwak, and Alyvia Meanor.

Butler's Griffith finished 17th in the 100 butterfly prelims, clocking in at 58.26. Diver Mackenzie Clark of Seneca Valley went on to finish 12th in the 1-meter diving competition, with a final score of 374.80.

Day two of Class 3A competition resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. for the girls and 10:50 a.m. for the boys.
