Heroic actions may inspire others

“Whoever you are, I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers,” says Blanche DuBois in her immortal final line of Tennessee Williams’ classic play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

Brett Charlier of Fombell can likely relate to that line.

On March 2, the Beaver County man’s life was saved by a wife and husband from Evans City who acted as good Samaritans when they came upon Charlier’s car in a ditch in Lancaster Township.

Charlier was slumped over and his pulse was faint when the couple found him in his car, which was still running.

According to the incident’s police report, Charlier — who was arrested at the scene on a charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance — had allegedly shot heroin before driving that night.

After the couple discovered him, the wife — who is a nurse practitioner certified in advanced life support with intensive care unit experience — immediately put her skills to good use.

While her husband called 911, she checked for a pulse after noticing that Charlier’s face was gray and his lips were turning blue.

Her husband laid Charlier on the ground and she tilted his head back, trying to keep his airway open.

At that moment, another person pulled over and offered her services. This new arrival to the scene — a nurse anesthetist — performed two rounds of 30 chest compressions and continued to check Charlier’s pulse, which eventually led to his breathing more normally and awakening.

Brett Charlier was in luck that night.

“What she did went above what a normal person would do,” Lancaster Township police Sgt. Mike Cornell said of the unnamed woman who helped to keep Charlier alive, but his comment applies to all three people at the scene.

This incident is a reminder of the heroism of everyday people who go out of their way to help a stranger.

The couple who pulled over to help Charlier has asked to remain anonymous and we respect their privacy.

At this point in our nation’s history, the country feels more divided than it has at any other time in recent memory. There has been a noticeable breakdown in civility.

But the scene on Crab Run Road in Lancaster Township this past weekend offers a glimpse of the best humankind has to offer. The actions of the couple and nurse anesthetist who pulled over to help a person in need are heroic. We hope they inspire others to do the same.
