The Butler street department racked up 452 hours of overtime clearing nighttime snowfall from roads in January.

City Councilman Kenny Bonus, director of streets and public improvements, reported the overtime during Thursday's council meeting.

While the off-hours snowfalls were bad for the city budget, a bit of good news came out of the harsh winter weather.

Bonus said the city's salt supply ran so low at one point last month that officials reached out to neighboring Butler Township for help. Township officials offered to let the city use some of the township's salt as long as it was replaced, he said.

However, the city crew managed to get by with the salt they had. Additional salt has been purchased since, he said.

Reappointments delayed

Council tabled the vote on reappointing two board members to the Butler Area Sewer Authority because officials want to interview the men about their views on operating the authority.

Councilman Michael Walter, city liaison to the authority, said the five-year terms of Edgar Hassler Jr., authority treasurer, and Kenneth Henry, assistant secretary, have expired.

Both men continue to serve on the five-member board.

Councilman Jeff Smith said he had not received any complaints about the authority but wanted to talk to the men, noting that five years is a long term. Mayor Ben Smith also indicated that he would like to interview the men.

The mayor announced the appointment of Dustin Orwig to the parks, recreation grounds and facilities authority to replace John Vissari, who resigned. Orwig's term will end Jan. 1, 2022.

He also said authority member Phillip Lefevre submitted a letter of resignation Thursday. Council will vote to accept the resignation at the March 12 meeting.
