2 more charged in PPG reimbursement probe

Police say false payments made

CRANBERRY TWP — Two people who allegedly received false reimbursement checks approved by a Beaver County woman have been charged.

Robert J. Morrow, 66, of New Brighton and Alexandra N. Michalik, 22, of Shippensburg, were both arraigned Wednesday for their role in a case involving Robin M. Morrow, 44, of New Brighton, who was arraigned last week and is the daughter of Robert Morrow and mother of Michalik's boyfriend.

According to court documents, Cranberry Township police were contacted in January about alleged fraudulent activity at PPG in its customer claim department.

On Dec. 13, Robin Morrow allegedly created an entry in the computer database by logging in as a former co-worker. The entry was backdated for Feb. 2, 2017, and issued to “Bob Morrow” for $497.18. The check was cashed Dec. 26. No proof of purchase was connected to the entry, and a photo of a Beaver County home connected to the claim was not accurate.

Investigators also found that duplicate claims were made for $1,585.08 in September and December 2018. Two checks for the same claim were written to “Alexandra Michalik” and “Alex Michalik” in those instances, the complaint states. Images connected to the database entry were not accurate, police said.

Initially, Robin Morrow denied knowing Robert Morrow, and said she had no relationship with Michalik. She said she did not receive any of the funds. The complaint notes that Michalik and Robin Morrow had the same address.

Investigators went to that residence, where Robin Morrow “reluctantly acknowledged Robert was her father,” the complaint states. Robin Morrow told police her son had previously been in a relationship with Michalik. She said Michalik believed the second check was a school loan reimbursement, and realized the mistake after depositing it.

Robin Morrow reportedly would not answer many of the investigator's questions, but repeatedly said she did not receive any of the money.

Robert Morrow is charged with felony altering an access device and misdemeanor conspiracy to commit theft by deception, theft by deception and receiving stolen property. Michalik is charged with altering an access device, conspiracy to commit theft by deception, theft by deception and receiving stolen property, all felonies. Robin Morrow is charged with felony counts of altering an access device, conspiracy to commit theft by deception or false impression, theft by deception or false impression and misdemeanor conspiracy to commit theft by deception or false impression.

All three are free on their own recognizance, and preliminary hearings are scheduled for March 1.
