A Pittsburgh man pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to a drug crime he was alleged to have committed in the Butler County Prison.

The plea deal was one of three involving Chance Rice in three separate investigations. Rice pleaded guilty to two charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and one count of possession with intent to distribute. Rice was prohibited from carrying a gun after he was convicted in 2014 for a felony.

U.S. Attorney Scott Brady, reported Tuesday that Rice, 26, of Pittsburgh was being held last summer in the county jail as a federal inmate awaiting trial for gun charges dating back to 2015. While at the jail, prison officials searched his cell July 10, 2018, and discovered paper soaked in synthetic marijuana. A lab test revealed the substance, and in court on Monday, Rice admitted to possessing the drug and providing it to other inmates in the jail.

The firearms charges to which Rice pleaded guilty stem from incidents in September and October 2015 in the Pittsburgh and Edgewood areas respectively.

Rice will be sentenced June 3 for all three counts and faces up to 50 years in prison and up to a $2.5 million fine.
