Pets, patrons and employees evacuated a township pet store Monday morning after occupants smelled smoke. Occupants spilled out into the parking lot of the PetSmart on Route 228, while emergency responders rushed to the scene around 8 a.m. No pets or people were injured, however, EMS units arrived just in case, and Cranberry Township and Harmony firefighters began investigating the smoky smell. Cranberry fire units began looking inside the shop as Harmony units accessed the roof via ladder truck, and a small crowd of customers and their dogs looked on. Responders eventually found the culprit, a malfunctioning hot water tank sputtering smoke into the business. After fixing the problem, units cleared PetSmart of danger around 9 a.m., saying the store could reopen for business, although the water tank would have to be replaced.
