No foul play suspected in shooting death

A Butler man who admitted to shooting and killing a man — who he said stabbed him in November — died Monday of a gunshot wound, but police are not investigating the incident as a homicide.

Raymond Covelli, 35, was found unresponsive in his Zeigler Avenue home by officers who responded to a report of a man with a gunshot wound, police said.

Covelli was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was pronounced dead.

A report on the autopsy conducted by the Allegheny County medical examiner's office into the cause and manner of his death has not been completed, said Capt. James Hollobaugh.

“However, there is no reason to suspect foul play in the death of Mr. Covelli, and the death is not being treated as a homicide,” Butler Police Chief Bob O'Neill said in a statement issued Wednesday. “The death was not related to the injuries suffered during the earlier confrontation in November.”

Covelli claimed that he shot Adam Selfridge, 37, of Butler after Selfridge stabbed him during a confrontation Nov. 9 in an alley near Selfridge's home on West Cunningham Street, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Selfridge was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy later determined he died from a gunshot to the chest.

Police turned the case over to the Butler County District Attorney's Office, but no charges were filed.

The case remains open.

“That's still an ongoing investigation,” Hollobaugh said.

The gun used in the November shooting was recovered and is a larger caliber than the gun used in Monday's shooting, police said.

Police would not confirm Wednesday that Covelli's gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
