CENTER TWP — A suspected drunken driver was arrested after allegedly leading state police on a vehicle pursuit Thursday night in the township.

Joshua N. Seybert, 22, of Clay Township is facing felony and other charges in the incident that began about 11:15 p.m. when police say a trooper's radar device clocked his Chevrolet Sonic traveling 56 mph in a 35 mph zone on Mercer Road.

Seybert accelerated and crossed the solid yellow line in front of the Center Township Elementary School as Trooper Philip Treadway pursued him, according to court documents.

Treadway activated his emergency lights and siren, but the suspect would not stop, police said. Instead, he is accused of continuing “at (a) high rate of speed” past the intersection with Route 8.

The defendant turned right onto Sunset Drive and, on his way, again crossed the solid yellow line, failed to signal and ran a stop sign, documents said.

The pursuit ended, police said, when Seybert pulled into a dead-end driveway on Cherokee Drive.

When the officer asked the defendant why he didn't stop, according to a police affidavit, he replied that he knew he was going to be pulled over.

He also allegedly admitted to having two alcoholic drinks about 90 minutes earlier.

Police said Seybert showed impairment when given field sobriety tests, but he was unable to provide a usable sample for a breath test. He refused to submit to a blood test.

District Judge Wayne Seibel arraigned Seybert on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.

Police also cited him for 12 traffic violations. He was released on $5,000 unsecured bail following arraignment.

In charging the defendant, police noted that he was arrested for DUI in 2016.

Butler County court records in that case showed that he was placed into the county Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program that same year.
