Traffic on Route 422 in Clearfield Township near Williams & Williams Line Paint was slowed after an eastbound dump truck crossed both westbound lanes shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday and got hung up on embankment. A Kittanning man suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the empty truck, state police said.

CLEARFIELD TWP — Lucky — that was the consensus assessment from police and emergency crews at a late Wednesday morning crash involving a momentary runaway dump truck that left no one injured.

The wreck occurred around 11:20 a.m. on the typically well-traveled Route 422 east near Williams & Williams Line Paint.

State police Cpl. Jacob Jesse said the truck, which was empty, was traveling east in the right lane when the driver apparently passed out at the wheel after suffering a medical emergency.

Police did not immediately release the name of the driver, a Kittanning man believed to be in his mid-40s, authorities said.

The truck crossed the left eastbound lane, the double yellow center lines and both westbound lanes, Jesse said. It continued another 150 to 200 feet along the north berm before it got hung up on an embankment.

“A witness was right behind him and watched the whole thing,” Jesse said. “She came right up and checked on him.”

By then, the man had regained consciousness.

“He was awake, but confused,” Jesse said of the driver.

The man had no visible injuries from the accident. An ambulance crew examined him before he was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township, Armstrong County, for further evaluation of his medical emergency, which was not disclosed.

East Butler and Herman volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.

Police stopped westbound traffic before it was opened up to one lane. A wrecker eventually arrived and helped get the truck off the embankment and back on the road.
