PENN TWP — A Westmoreland County woman faces a hearing this month on charges that she stole several thousand dollars from her father's bank account in 2017 and 2018.

Jean L. McCormick, 29, of Murrysville is charged with a felony count of theft and a misdemeanor count of misapplication of entrusted property. She is free on $10,000 unsecured bail.

Penn Township police said that on June 27, 2018, they spoke to the victim, a resident of the Colonial Gardens Care home on Steppland Road. He told an officer that the defendant is the co-signer on his bank account, which is where his Social Security checks are deposited.

The victim reported that beginning in March 2018, checks from the account, written by his daughter, reportedly bounced, according to court documents. The checks were to pay for his room and board at the care home.

A subsequent investigation of the man's bank records identified “multiple” transactions between March 2017 and July 2018 that he had not authorized. Among the unauthorized transactions were $5,435 to the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, documents said.

Police Cpl. Dennis Crawford later tried to speak to McCormick, but she reportedly failed to show up for an interview.

On Dec. 28, Crawford filed charges, accusing the defendant of failing to apply her father's monies, totaling $8,503, on his behalf.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled Jan. 30 at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Online court records listed Michael Worgul of Pittsburgh as McCormick's attorney. A secretary at the law firm on Thursday said Worgul does not comment on pending cases.
