State expands online drug monitoring

Prescription use can be reported

The state has expanded its online Prescription Drug Monitoring Program by adding a way to report suspicious prescription drug activity.

A news release from the state Department of Health says it will notify drug monitoring program users, including doctors and pharmacists, about the changes and encourage them to make a report if they believe they suspect diversion activity.

According to the release, medical professionals are the most likely to identify suspicious prescription drug activity, but anyone in Pennsylvania can access and use the reporting tool.

“The illegal diversion of prescription pain pills from doctors’ offices and pharmacies is contributing to the opioid epidemic, said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “This new reporting tool ... allows people to anonymously give our office detailed information about suspected diversion, so we are better able to arrest and prosecute the criminals who are poisoning our communities for their own profit.”

More than 90,000 PDMP users are conducting more than 1.6 million searches each month to ensure opioids and other controlled substances are being responsibility prescribed and dispensed, said Gov. Tom Wolf.

“Now, PDMP users will have another way to help reduce the misuse of prescription drugs. It’s a new tool in our tool kit for fighting the opioid epidemic,” Wolf said.

The reporting form can also be accessed at www.attorneygeneral.gov/Rx.
