One person was reportedly injured when a heavy-duty pickup truck struck the back of a school bus on Mahood Road in Center Township about 7 a.m. Wednesday. The driver of the pickup suffered minor to moderate injuries. Unionville volunteer firefighters had to free him from the wreckage.

CENTER TWP — One person was injured Wednesday morning when a heavy-duty pickup truck rear-ended a school bus on Mahood Road, authorities said.

Four children were on the Valley Lines bus, but none of them were injured. The bus driver also was not hurt.

The wreck, however, trapped the pickup driver. Unionville volunteer firefighters rescued the man, who is believed to be in his 20s.

“We had to remove the driver side door and lift the dashboard off him,” said Unionville Fire Chief Nathan Wulff.

The man's injuries were described as minor to moderate. A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to him before he was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of another vehicle, a sport utility vehicle, ended up on an embankment while trying to avoid the crash between the bus and pickup.

All the vehicles were traveling west on Mahood Road, Wulff said. The crash left the damaged bus across both lanes and closed the road between Red Dog and Shroyer Mill roads.

Ambulance medics evaluated the students, and a Butler School District representative later showed up to check on them as well as the bus driver.

Wulff said he did not know if the road conditions were a factor in the crash.

“There was slush in places (on the road),” he said, “but I didn't notice any ice.”

State police investigated the wreck, but an accident report was not immediately available.
