West Sunbury council members expect spending to decrease next year. The borough's tentative 2019 budget shows an income of about $50,000, a $4,000 decrease from its yield in 2018.

In contrast, the budget shows expenses decreasing from $53,000 in 2018 to an expected $31,250 for 2019.

Joy Berteotti said the decrease reflects the completion of projects that the borough has undertaken in recent years. “We finished our roadwork last year,” Berteotti said. “We don't anticipate that level of expenditures at all.”

Berteotti said road work is the biggest expense the borough deals with on an annual basis, but otherwise its income remains about the same every year.

“Our income remains relatively steady from year to year,” she said. “When we know we're going to have a big project, we work on saving up money and do it all at one time.”

She said typically the borough will save for bigger projects or upgrades through the general fund.

“Any excess next year would stay in the general fund,” Berteotti said.

She said excesses can also be used for special projects that arise.

“Right now, we do not have anything,” Berteotti said. She said the borough is in a good place with both its finances and its infrastructure.

“The sidewalks are done and the roads are paved,” Berteotti said. “We have a stable income, and we have no debt.” The borough is expected to vote to finalize the budget at a meeting Monday. The spending plan is available for public inspection until then.
