EVANS CITY — Borough police have charged a Fombell man with theft and fleeing police while they were investigating him in connection with a gas station robbery in Franklin Township.

Police were called Tuesday to respond to the scene of a robbery at the Kwik Fill gas station.

Witnesses described the robber as 5-foot-8-inches tall, wearing a black ski mask and sweat shirt and driving a vehicle which police later found to be registered to a Melissa Vaughan, documents state.

Officers attempted to make contact with her at her Evans City address but were unsuccessful. They also reportedly found that her son, Chad Andrew Vaughan, 32, of Fombell had charges in multiple incidents of theft and matched the description of the robber.

Officers were able to make contact with a different son, Gary Vaughan, who told them he was getting ready to go to the police station to report that his brother, Chad Vaughan, had taken his stepfather’s work truck, a white Ford F-150 belonging to AR Chambers and Sons Inc., documents state.

Gary Vaughan reportedly knew nothing about the gas station robbery or the other vehicle, only that his brother had taken the truck while his parents were out of the country.

Officers explained the situation to Gary Vaughan, and he told them he had called his brother to tell him that he wouldn’t call the police if he returned the truck right away, documents state.

Chad Vaughan reportedly agreed and was headed back to the house.

Officers waited at the house while a second cruiser provided backup as they planned to take Chad Vaughan into custody.

He arrived at the residence in the truck and parked it outside, but when he saw officers approaching, he jumped back in and started the truck, documents state.

After catching him, officers charged Chad Vaughan with theft, attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving in Butler County.

Police found the vehicle used in the robbery in the family’s garage, according to documents.

Chad Vaughan is in the Beaver County jail on separate robbery charges, and is held on a $50,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 16.
