Professor offers Buddhist philosophy seminar at Maridon

A Buddhist chaplain will host a seminar at the Maridon Museum for those interested in studying Buddhist philosophy.

Dr. Cynthia Marshall will talk about Buddhism with an emphasis on Zen at 1 p.m. Nov. 17.

“I spent two years, not every day but extended periods of time, at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, N.M.,” Marshall said. “I am what’s called a Buddhist chaplain.”

She plans to talk about basic concepts including Buddhist life and then explain how Zen is an offshoot, she said.

“Buddhism is essentially related to art at the Maridon,” she said.

“When you look at a lot of the Maridon pieces, they’re related to concepts of Buddhism in painting. Buddhism is trying to be in the present moment.

“It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey,” Marshall said. “And you can see that a lot in the art (at the Maridon) ... There’s at least one early ink drawing and then they have all the accouterments for the artist.”

Marshall has taught at the Community College of Beaver County for 26 years. She serves as the director of the honors program at CCBC and is an English professor.

Early in 2019, she will present a seminar on meditation at the Maridon. Additionally, talks on Buddhism take place the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the museum, 322 N. McKean St.

For more information, call 724-282-0123 or visit www.maridon.org.

Tickets are required for the seminars. The Thursday talks are free. Donations and proceeds benefit the museum.
