A southbound tractor-trailer on Monday morning drifted into the parking lane on North Main Street and struck two vehicles. The driver told police he was distracted and drifted into the lane. There were no injuries.

Election work was temporarily halted for two women on Monday morning when a tractor-trailer smashed into their vehicles, which were parked in front of the North Main Street office of Democratic candidate for the 16th District Ron DiNicola.

Police told Catherine Lalond, the chairman of the county Democratic Committee, that the southbound driver of the Marmon/Keystone truck became distracted, looked down and drifted into the parking lane just north of the Brady Street intersection.

The truck heavily damaged the driver's side of Lalond's 2010 Toyota Sienna, which was full of campaign signs and other election-related items.

Lalond picked through the signs and shook glass from each before leaning them up against the intact side of her van.

“I don't usually park on Main Street, but I had a lot of bags to carry today,” Lalond said.

The other vehicle that was damaged belongs to the state Democratic Committee chairman.

She said those inside DiNicola's office heard a noise and went outside to see the two vehicles pushed up onto the sidewalk.

The state committee chair's car was pushed into a city trash can and Lalond's into an ornamental tree.

If she is unable to get a rental car today, Lalond has another plan in place.

“I'll probably get my son to take me to the polls,” she said.

No one was injured in the incident and police would not say whether the unnamed truck driver would be cited.
