Seven Fields man arrested on child porn charges

SEVEN FIELDS — An investigation into the downloading of child pornography turned up more than 500 files and resulted in more than 100 felony charges for a borough man, authorities said.

Jacob J. Schmader, 42, is charged with 50 counts of dissemination of a photograph or film of child sex acts, 50 counts of child pornography, and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.

State police Thursday arrested Schmader after a search warrant was served at his home, culminating an undercover investigation that began May 17, according to court documents, when a computer on the BitTorrent file sharing network was found to “seed” child pornography to the network.

Investigators downloaded files from that computer to confirm their contents.

Police traced the IP address for the computer, and then subpoenaed records to track the owner of that address. They found it to be Schmader, the criminal complaint said.

The police Northwest Computer Crime Task Force conducted the warrant search.

According to the complaint, Schmader told investigators that he had downloaded the files. Police also found two hard drives and a laptop that contained more than 500 child pornography videos, documents said.

District Judge William Fullerton arraigned Schmader, who was later released on $25,000 unsecured bail, with ordered pretrial supervision.

At his arraignment, the defendant told Fullerton that he is married and has two children, ages 10 and 12.

His preliminary hearing is set Dec. 7 at the office of District Judge Dave Kovach in Cranberry Township.
