CHERRY TWP — A Snapchat post threatening violence at the Moniteau School District landed a former student in trouble with the law, authorities said.

The post included a picture of six upright bullets and the message, “Don't come to school tomorrow,” according to state police.

Moniteau officials notified police about 10:25 p.m. Thursday. Investigators subsequently traced the alleged threat to a 17-year-old Petrolia boy, who formerly attended Moniteau, Trooper Ron Kesten said.

The threat proved to be unfounded, district officials said, and there was no disruption of classes Friday.

The boy, who police did not identify, is facing charges of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct in Butler County juvenile court.

Police allege the suspect sent the Snapchat message to about 30 students at Moniteau.

Investigators spoke to the boy and his parents but police did not discuss why the teen made the alleged threat.

The district immediately called police after administrators learned of the social media threat, Moniteau School Superintendent Sean Arney said.

Police, in turn, he noted, contacted the district about 2 a.m. Friday to advise they had detained a suspect.

Parents of Moniteau students at 6:30 a.m. received a robocall through the school's messaging system, Arney said, informing them about what happened and the action taken by the district and police.

Later that day, the district posted information about the incident on its website.

“As a result of the quick response and investigation from the (police) officers,” the district post said, “we strongly feel there is no longer a threat and our schools are safe.”
