State police on Friday arrested a Butler man accused of urging a 14-year-old girl to leave her home in El Paso, Texas, and sending her videos of him performing a sex act on himself.

Anthony John Smith, 42, faces charges of unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, sexual abuse of children through the production of child pornography and interference with custody of children. He is in Butler County Prison on $50,000 monetary bail.

Trooper Bernard Novak, a member of the state police’s bureau of criminal investigation, was tipped off on Sept. 7 by a federal task force that the El Paso Police Department was investigating reports that Smith was communicating online with a child, according to a criminal complaint.

Smith first contacted the child using an online social media application called 7 Cups, police said. The app bills itself as the “world’s largest emotional support system” and promises users they will “connect with caring people for text chat, online therapy & counseling.”

Police say Smith initially posed as a 15-year-old and soon their online communication grew to include platforms like Pinterest, Instagram and Textnow and other social media outlets.

Smith also soon shed his online persona, police said, and began asking the girl to send him explicit photos of herself. In turn, Smith sent her nude photos of himself and a video in which he performs a sex act, according to court documents. Police said Smith also urged the girl to seek “emancipation” from her parents so they could be together, and engaged the girl in “sexualized chatting and texting.

Police said the girl’s parents discovered the exchanges and contacted police in El Paso to report Smith’s behavior. El Paso police in turn notified the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which then notified police in Butler.

As part of Novak’s investigation he took over the girl’s Pinterest account and began to communicate with Smith under the guise of the girl’s identity, according to court documents. Novak also reviewed the girl’s phone records and found that she and Smith had exchanged at least 80 phone calls.

Still under the guise of the girl’s identity, Novak also received sexual photos, videos and emails from Smith. He also acknowledges to Novak that the victim is a teenager, according to court documents.

After confirming Smith’s address, police arrested him on Friday at his home on Virginia Avenue. Once in custody, he allegedly admitted to police that he engaged in an online sexual relationship with the girl. He also confirmed all the various media forms that they used and “he understood that the relationship was wrong and illegal,” according to court documents.
