The Veterans Breakfast Club is coming here for the first time on Oct. 29.

Not to be confused with the 1980s coming-of-age movie, “The Breakfast Club,” the event will be held at Lyndora American Legion Post 778, and while it is for military veterans, it is free and open to anyone with a penchant for listening.

“It's a time for the guys to tell their stories and for people who aren't veterans to learn a little something from these veterans,” said Donna Croft, of Butler, who organized the event in her role as the Veterans Administration Voluntary Service representative for Butler's Daughters of the American Revolution.

She noted that this is the first time the Pittsburgh-area organization will have an event like this here.

“We have so many veterans in this area and we thought it would be worth a try,” she said.

Post 778, whose commander is Robert “Bucky” Ferensic, is providing a full breakfast with the help of Butler Post 117, Croft said.

The Veterans Breakfast Club began expanding in 2010. According to information provided by the organization, as many as 200 attended the South Hills breakfast while and attendance at other locations — Penn Hills, Moon Township, and North Hills — was on the rise.

The next year, the organization gained tax exempt status and in 2012 it began to preserve the stories of veterans by recording the events.

Todd DePastino teamed with Kevin Farkas of Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative, and together they've conducted and recorded hundreds of long-form oral history interviews and live storytelling events.

According to information on the organization's website, the Veterans Breakfast Club hosts 30-40 storytelling events a year.

American Legion Post 778 is at 150 Legion Memorial Lane, off Kohler Avenue. The breakfast is expected to start at 8:30 a.m.
