A Butler resident grew the heaviest watermelon entered into this year’s Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-Off in Canfield, Ohio.

Jim Stawecki of Butlerwon first place with a 122.5 pound watermelon. He also submitted the second widest sunflower of the event.

Stawecki had little comment to make when asked about his victory, saying only that it was a hard year to grow large watermelons and that this year’s crop was only a third of record-setting melons. Still, he said he enjoyed the competition and was proud of his win.

As was previously reported, Ron Emert of Jefferson Township entered a pumpkin in the competition. His pumpkin was weighed at 695.5 pounds and came in 25th of 30 pumpkins, he said.

The winner of the pumpkin competition was Karl Haist of Saegertown, Pa. Haist entered a 2,416.5 pound pumpkin, the fourth heaviest pumpkin ever grown, according to a news release.

The world record pumpkin weighed 2,624.6 pounds and was grown in Belgium by Matthias Willemijns.
