Butler County is among 30 Pennsylvania counties eligible to receive some of $15 million earmarked to provide housing for people fighting opioid addictions.

The program is a joint effort by four state departments and was announced by Gov. Tom Wolf Wednesday. Butler County was selected by a formula that measured substance abuse disorder rates against overdose related deaths, according to a news release. It is considered one of the 15 rural counties included in the 30.

Colin Day, a press secretary with the state’s Department of Human Services, said there is no announced dates for the program yet and a breakdown of how the $15 million will be split up is also not yet announced.

Local organizations within each county are being asked to submit applications with proposals for programs.

The money will go to organizations that “help individuals to become and remain engaged in evidence-based treatment interventions” and provide stabile housing for people in such treatment programs.

About one-fifth of homeless people have a chronic substance abuse disorder, according to the news release.
