Tuesday — Police obtained arrest warrants for a man and woman accused of breaking into an apartment in August on the 100 block of North Main Street.

Tyler Cole Lasher, 22, no known address, and Patience C. Hamilton, 19, of Butler are both charged with felony counts of trespass and conspiracy to commit trespass, and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

The owner of the apartment building on Aug. 23 notified police of the apparent break-in, according to court documents. He said the basement door and jamb were broken and the door was wide open.

Police later reviewed surveillance video, documents said, that showed Lasher and Hamilton on Aug. 16 “forcing their way into the apartment to retrieve several items,” documents said.

The owner told officers that he recognized both defendants. Hamilton, he said, was a former tenant.

Wednesday — Chad J. Hustak Jr., 20, of Butler was charged with making a false return in June at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

Police said Hustak on June 29 took merchandise for which he did not pay and returned it for an in-store gift card totaling $132.30. He is charged with theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

10:11 a.m. Tuesday — Sandra L. Martin, 54, of Kittanning was caught allegedly failing to scan four items of merchandise totaling $125.36 while using a self-checkout register at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

She is charged with a summary count of retail theft.

Monday — Police charged Christy L. Beer, 47, of Butler with bouncing two checks at the Highfield Community Center on Highfield Road. She is accused of writing the checks, which totaled $500 and were passed June 24 and July 1, on an account that did not have sufficient funds.

She is charged with two counts of bad checks.

Sept. 21 — Jeanie A. Maffei, 63, of Butler was charged with drugged driving stemming from an August traffic stop in Butler Township. Police said she was stopped about 7:10 p.m. Aug. 31 on Route 8 south.

According to court documents, she handed police a debit card when they asked for her driver’s license. She subsequently failed field sobriety testing and a search of her car turned up a plastic straw with suspected drug residue, according to police.

Maffei was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology results, documents said, showed she had morphine and fentanyl in her system.

She is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

[naviga:h3]State Police, New Castle[/naviga:h3]

10:40 p.m. Sept. 19 — Someone in a vehicle threw a bottle that struck a 64-year-old Butler man’s car as he was driving on Route 65 just south of Route 388 in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The unknown suspect’s vehicle was headed south on the road.

The front portion of the victim’s car sustained unspecified damage. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 724-598-2211.

Monday — A 20-year-old New Bethlehem man was charged with felony drug possession stemming from a September traffic stop in South Buffalo Township that turned up about one-half pound of suspected marijuana, as well as marijuana wax and more than $1,000.

Police said they stopped William F. Smead, about 1:25 p.m. Sept. 1 on Route 28 north, and subsequently suspected he was driving under the influence.

He is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana, DUI and driving a vehicle with unsafe equipment.

Caitlin M. Travis, 26, of New Bethlehem, a passenger, is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

8:35 p.m. Sept. 16 — A sport utility vehicle driven by Gina Bonnett, 28, of Freeport struck a deer on Route 28 north just north of the Buffalo Bridge in South Buffalo Township.

Monday — Richard A. Vega, 41, of Butler was charged with drunken driving stemming from a traffic stop about 2:15 a.m. Sept. 8 on the 2400 block of Freeport Road in East Franklin Township.

Vega is charged with driving under the influence, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and reckless driving.
