Quite a debut

Slippery Rock girls roll, 18-0, under new coach Cessar

Slippery Rock's girls soccer team made head coach Sarah Cessar's debut a memorable one Tuesday night.

Kayla Daugherty, Amanda Lewis and Ellie Reiser all scored three goals in leading the Rockets to an 18-0 victory over West Middlesex.

Cessar, a 2010 Slippery Rock graduate, was an assistant coach at Butler the past four years before accepting the head coaching job at her alma mater last month.

Slippery Rock hosts Harbor Creek on Thursday.

Shaler 4, Freeport 1 — Sidney Shemanski's goal off an assist from Emma Check put the Yellowjackets ahead with 20 minutes left in the game before the Titans scored four goals in a 6-minute span.

Maddie Wagner totaled eight saves in net in the loss.

Boys Golf

Shea Moffa earned medalist honors with a 36 as Mars defeated Freeport (5-4), 195-230, Tuesday at Buffalo Golf Course.

Boys Soccer

Senior midfielder Matt Olsen scored two goals to lead Mars to a 5-0 win over visiting Kiski Area.

Also finding the net were Austin Rocke, Dane Beller and D.J. Carter.

Butler 4, Shaler 1 — Tate Mohney scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Golden Tornado.

Landon Mohney also had a goal and an assist and Evan Fetter also scored for the Golden Tornado.

Karns City 6, Elk County Catholic 0 — Austin Fahlor scored a pair of goals and added as assists as the Gremlins rolled.

Dakota King, Nate Rondinelli, Kaden Scherer and Ryan Truax also added goals.

Jake Weckerly got the shutout in goal with five saves.

Freeport 6, Derry 1 — Hunter Hardin scored three goals for the Yellowjackets and added an assist. Cole Bennick had two goals, Addison Stewart one.

Braden Change, Dan Lynch and PJ Linhart had assists for Freeport (2-0, 1-0).

Volleyball

Defending PIAA 3A champion Knoch picked up where it left off last season with a 25-9, 25-18, 25-22 win over Blackhawk.

Kennedy Christy and Hannah Rowe each had 14 kills and Skylar Burkett added eight kills and 16 service points for the Knights.

Slippery Rock 3, Grove City 1 — Morgan Malinski had 18 assists and Madison Chechak added nine kills and 13 digs as the Rockets opened the season with a 27-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 win over the rival Eagles.

Annika Peale added nine kills and six blocks for Slippery Rock.

Karns City 3, Keystone 2 — Rayna Miller had six kills and Emily Huff and Emma Clark each added five kills as the Gremlins won a marathon match, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-12.

Alyssa Stitt added eight points and four aces and Emily Wolfe also had eight points for Karns City.

The Gremlins' junior varsity team also won, 25-17, 25-21.

Cranberry 3, Union 0 —Morgan Cumberland had 10 assists, but the Damsels dropped their season opener, 25-21, 25-17, 25-12.

Pine-Richland 3, Butler 2 — Maria Lucas had nine kills and 26 digs for the Golden Tornado, who lost 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-6.

Tabitha Walker had six kills and 25 digs, Heidi Gross five kills for Butler (0-1), which plays in the Moon Tournament Saturday.

Cross Country

Christian Sosa and Harely Plugh each won their races for Slippery Rock or a brutally hot afternoon as the Rockets boys downed Greenville 44-17 and the girls won 19-43.

Seneca Valley's girls tennis team prevailed over Shaler, 3-2. Singles wins went to Vibha Hodachalli and Megan Bablak. Kailey McCune and Sienna Summers combined for a doubles win.

Private Schools

Jackson Vosmaer and Christian Cater each scored a pair of goals as Portersville Christian School beat Plants & Pillars 8-1.

Derek Butterworth had two assists for PCS, which also beat Heartland Christian Academy 7-0 recently.
