Scoop seeking big week

Not the best start, but not a bad one either.

I’ll take it.

Picking games in Week Zero is always difficult. You’re not sure what a team really has until the action is live and the hitting is real.

That makes prognosticating even more of an iffy proposition.

But the Scoopster went 7-3 to begin the season — a pretty respectable first week.

Now, we’re on to Week 1 and we have a full slate of games to pick.

Let’s see if I can keep that momentum going.

On to the picks:

Baldwin 25, Butler 13 — The Golden Tornado got off to a rough start Friday at North Hills, but played much better in the second half.

With a slew of new players on the roster, there may be some growing pains for Butler.

This week, the Tornado go to Baldwin to try to bounce back from Week Zero.

They’ll give Baldwin a tussle, but this is another tough game for Butler, on the road against another improving team.

Central Catholic 29, Seneca Valley 20 — Raiders’ quarterback Gabe Lawson has taken another big step in his development.

Lawson is a true dual threat and showed that last week against McDowell when he threw three touchdown passes.

Central Catholic is a tough opponent, though. SV will give the Vikings all they can handle here.

Blackhawk 22, Knoch 16 — The Knights moved the ball last week, but had drive after drive stall.

If they can correct that, Knoch could be a very dangerous team this season.

Blackhawk, though, will eke this one out.

Mars 14, Moon 13 — This is one scary Mars defense.

The Planets will eclipse Moon.

North Catholic 38, Burrell 9 — Zack Rocco “only” threw for 116 yards last week. He didn’t need to throw.

I have a feeling he will light up the Burrell defense this week.

Derry 18, Freeport 17 — Perhaps the game of the week, Freeport was idle in Week Zero.

This is a tough first game out of the gate for the Yellowjackets.

Karns City 32, Punxsutawney 14 — The Gremlins want to bounce back after squandering a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter in a loss to Brockway last week.

A cornered Gremlin is a dangerous Gremlin.

Clarion 30, Moniteau 19 — The Warriors raised some eyebrows by making the long trek to Kane and coming away with a big road win.

The true litmus test will be this week against Clarion in the home opener.

Clarion is always a staunch opponent.

Union/A-C Valley 24, Sheffield 21 — Both teams are hungry for a win.

Sheffield has an 11-game losing streak. Union/A-C Valley has won just one game in that span.

Slippery Rock 28, Reynolds 11 — The Rockets are for real.

The defense has always been impressive under Larry Wendereusz and now the offense seems to be clicking early.

Apollo-Ridge 36, Summit Academy 12 — The Knights always seem to start slowly.

Scoop has 100 wins on his mind.
