Tornado ready to try it again
BUTLER TWP — Before first-year Butler head football coach Eric Christy can establish a program, his team needs to establish the line of scrimmage.
That is goal No. 1 as the Golden Tornado (0-1) travel to Baldwin (1-0) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday in a non-section game.
Butler begins league play the following week.
“We're inexperienced, but we can't stay inexperienced forever,” Christy said. “You can't practice the speed of the game. Now they've lived it. We have to learn from last week and get better.
“You hope to catch Baldwin in a down year, but that team isn't down at all. They're getting excellent quarterback play and their linebackers are also their running backs ... very athletic.”
The Tornado are coming off a 42-7 loss at North Hills, a game they trailed 42-0 at halftime. Baldwin is coming off a 34-7 win over Fox Chapel.
The Highlanders were 4-23 over the previous three seasons, including 1-8 last year.
“We played a lot of freshmen and sophomores last season and we're hoping that pays off this year,” second-year Baldwin coach Loren Cooley said. “Last week's win was a definite confidence-builder for us.”
Baldwin returns nine starters on both sides of the ball.
Butler continues to juggle its offensive line in efforts to find effective cohesion. Sam Enslen is moving from guard to tackle while Nate Hall is moving to guard. Three players are rotating in at the other tackle spot.
Christy said he is auditioning players at outside linebacker “as we gave up the edge too much last week along with not establishing the line of scrimmage.
“Our linemen need to fire out, get off the ball and take control.”
Byron Manchester and Austin Rodgers are among the players being worked at outside linebacker in practice this week.
“I pretty much addressed the team, looking for someone to move up and take the spot,” Christy said. “If you can do it, come show it.”
The Tornado lost receiver-defensive back Anthony Daviduk for four to six weeks with a broken finger suffered in the North Hills game.
“We're going to different play calls, getting back to the basics a little bit. Maybe that will help,” Christy said.
Baldwin quarterback Mason Stahl is a Division 1 prospect. He runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and threw for nearly 100 yards last week. He passed for 584 yards and rushed for 264 as a part-time starter last year.
Angelo Priore leads the Highlander ground game. He rushed for 102 yards on seven carries last week. Priore ruished for 759 yards and seven TDs last season.
“Anthony had those 100 yards on just three series last week,” Cooley said. “He should anchor our running game.”
Defensively, Cooley said the line “is the strength of that unit. We really controlled the line of scrimmage. I don't think they (Fox Chapel) gained more than 75 yards the whole night.”
Highlander sophomore Dorien Ford (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) anchors Baldwin's defensive front.
“He's one of the best defensive linemen around — very promising future,” Cooley said. “But Butler is much bigger than Fox Chapel up front. We face more of a challenge that way this week.”
Christy hopes it's too big of a challenge.
“We need to move the ball and wear down their two-way starters. That will be key for us,” he said.
