Mars wins Eagle County title
CALLERY — Matt DeSalvo struck out nine in going the distance Thursday night as Mars completed a three-game sweep of Mars II with a 9-7 win in the Eagle County baseball league finals at Callery Field.
DeSalvo scattered nine hits and walked one in the victory.
Mars II pulled within 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning before Bob Spithaler hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Mars lead.
Mars had a 9-4 lead in the seventh before Cody Wheeler drilled a three-run homer to tighten the margin. But Mars II could draw no closer.
Jim Pasquine homered and singled for Mars, which ends the season at 27-5. Brendan Malone and Jim Musgrove had two singles each.
Wheeler added a double and Evan Oswald had three singles for Mars II.
Mars had won Game 2 of the best-of-five series Wednesday night, 20-1. Jim Devine struck out seven in a route-going effort. Mars won Game 1 by a 14-3 count.
