Renfrew woman will show off crocheted, soft sculpture artwork
Renfrew resident Sally Fisher will have the first showing of her artwork since college with an exhibit later this month at the Butler Art Center.
Fisher will display more than 50 pieces of her work from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 at the Art Center, 344 S. Main St.
She has worked in many an art medium, including metal, lithographs and wood, but this show will feature her crocheted and free-form soft sculpture artwork.
“I create all the time; it doesn't stop,” Fisher said.
“For now this (crocheted work) is my favorite. Lord only knows what will happen after the show.”
The spare room and the back porch at her home provide studio space, she said.
Right now she said her whole house seems to be yarn-bombed, the practice of clothing an object like a tree or a chair all in yarn.
She said her sisters give her suggestions all the time (yarn covered lamp shade anyone?), and her grandchildren make requests.
“I have made things from video games for my grandsons, like from Minecraft, Sonic and Mario Brothers. My grandsons would draw me a picture and say, 'Can you yarn that, Grandma?' and I say, 'Yes.' They call them action figures, not dolls,” Fisher said. “And now I have a granddaughter to make fairies for too. I love it. It's always a challenge.”
She said she likes crocheting for now because it's very portable.
“I may get into some jewelry,” she said. “You can crochet cord and beading and things like that, or maybe back into watercolors.”
The Evans City native graduated from Seneca Valley High School and attended North Lake College in the Las Colinas area of Irving, Texas, majoring in art. That's where she had her watercolors exhibited, she said.
A reception for “Freeform Crochet by Sally” is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Art Center at 344 S. Main St.
Admission to the exhibit and reception is free. The reception will feature live music and refreshments.
