Eagle Amateur has 115 golfers thus far

SLIPPERY ROCK — The 24th annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament takes place Sunday at Oakview.

The 18-hole stroke play event had 115 golfers registered through Sunday.

“That's lower than we had anticipated at this point,” tournament committee member Rob Voltz said. “But golf tournament participation is down a bit pretty much everywhere right now.

“The good news is that we usually get 25 or 30 more golfers signing up in that final week. I'm assuming that will happen again ... I just always get a little nervous entering that last week of signups.”

Voltz will accept registrations through Saturday. Scheduled tee times for golfers registered through Thursday will be published in Friday's edition of the Butler Eagle.

Registration is available at butlereagleamateur.com or by calling Voltz at 724-822-4189. Tee times are at 7:45 a.m. or 1:15 p.m.

“Right now, I can accommodate golfers for the morning or afternoon flight, individual players or threesomes,” Voltz said.

Some of the bigger names in Eagle Amateur history had yet to sign up through last weekend. Scott Vice, winner of the tournament last year at Lake Arthur and in 2015 at Oakview, has yet to register. Five-time Eagle Amateur champion Sean Knapp has not signed up, either.

Vice, now the general manager at Lake Arthur Golf Club, edged Knapp by a stroke in last year's tournament.

“Sean has always been pretty good about getting his name in early, so he may have other plans that day,” Voltz said. “Scott may be committed to something going on at Lake Arthur, I don't know.”

Dave Hungerman, the 1998 Eagle Amateur champion, is among the early sign-ups.

“In terms of past champions, I don't know of any others who have registered yet,” Voltz said.

Women's sign-ups are also on the low side thus far. Two-time defending champion Paige Scott has signed up, as has Jane Wymer. Both are in the championship flight.

Jenna Rinker, one of the best players in the women's division in recent years, has yet to register. Oakview is her home course.

Voltz said he has played Oakview's course recently and “it is in tremendous condition. The course is firm and fast.”
