Two decades on, Regatta still a keystone for county

There are a lot of things that can happen to an event over the course of two decades.

It can grow stale; the organizers who provide the driving force behind its success can move away or retire; other events can materialize that draw interest and support away from what was once a can’t-miss occasion.

Sometimes, however, things can continue to click. That appears to be the case with the Lake Arthur Regatta, which this weekend will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a trademark mix of eco-tourist-style activities, family-friendly offerings, and more traditional festival fare, like live music and food trucks.

Even after all this time, the regatta still manages to draw thousands of people to Moraine State Park every year.

The truth is that things haven’t “just clicked” for the regatta over the course of the past two decades. The event is constantly being reinvented, added to and updated by organizers.

Take, for example, the Dock Dogs competition that proved so popular last summer and is returning this weekend for a second year. The event capitalizes on two very important coincidental circumstances: first are foremost, many people adore dogs and are thrilled to be able to watch them perform impressive feats of athleticism. Second, the event includes many local dog owners and trainers who participate in canine competitions across the region — which means that people not only get to watch dogs do amazing things, they get to watch dogs and people they might know do amazing things.

It’s this kind of inventiveness that manifests throughout the regatta, which also features experiences like paddleboarding and kayaking tours and races for people to participate in; and opportunities for children and their parents to have hands-on experiences with some unusual Pennsylvania wildlife.

In other words, organizers have managed to ensure the event has something for everyone, even if all you’d like to do is stroll around Lake Arthur and enjoy some nice weather, music and food.

That’s why we are celebrating the event on this page today. Pennsylvania’s natural resources and its natural beauty — its vast expanses and preserves of nature — are two of its greatest assets.

Events like the regatta help entice people who otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to preserves like Moraine into dipping their proverbial toes into the water. And if they are pleasantly surprised and come back for more on their own, so much the better.
