[naviga:h3]Choir plans next season[/naviga:h3]

PITTSBURGH — The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, which features singers from Butler County, has announced its upcoming 2018-19 season.

At 110 years in operation, the Mendelssohn Choir is the city’s oldest performing arts organization. Composed of 100-plus singers, it is led by Matthew Mehaffey.

Butler area performers include Deanna Golden, Holly Furman, Norrie Bastedo, Liana D. Alksnitis Lloyd, Earle Ashbridge and Ed Jaicks.

The season will open at 8 p.m. Feb. 15 with “Let My People Go! A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad,” a collaboration with Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the concert will take place.

The same concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Grove City College, and at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at West Virginia University.

The second show of the season is “Victoria’s Secret: A Life in Music,” regarding Queen Victoria, which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. May 18 at East Liberty Presbyterian Church and at 3 p.m. May 19 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper Saint Clair.

[naviga:h3]Mega Cruise coming to Penn[/naviga:h3]

PENN TWP — The 18th annual Mega Cruise is set for July 7 at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport.

Gates will open at 1 p.m., and the event will run until 10 p.m.

All types of cars, trucks, motorcycles and airplanes may attend. Show vehicles get in free, but spectators will be asked for a $2 entry donation to benefit the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department and cover the event’s costs.

Food, music, karaoke, Chinese auction and 50-50 will be available with fireworks to close out the night.

[naviga:h3]Summer events outdoors in SR[/naviga:h3]

SLIPPERY ROCK — Summer events planned at Slippery Rock Farmers Market include live music, children’s activities and crafts.

Bill and Joyce Ainsworth, who play regionally with the band “Harmony Road,” are scheduled to play Saturday.

Future musical offerings will include “Grugi,” Gregg Macklin and Fugi Sisca, with their acoustic mix; and the EASE Band, with Dave and Steve Hosa and friends.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays in Slippery Rock’s Gateway Park, along Route 108 between Elm and South Main Streets.

[naviga:h3]Theater festival set to open[/naviga:h3]

ALLEGHENY TWP, Westmoreland County — Freeport Theatre Festival’s 29th summer season will celebrate live-action heroes of the past and present.

The season will begin with “Washington in the Ohio Country,” a historical drama written by resident playwright Rennick Steele, which deals with the early military adventures of young George Washington. Those adventures, in the years 1753-55, set off the French and Indian War, and it all began with a request to deliver a letter, 500 miles away in the Ohio Country.

The action of Washington’s story will continue during each performance’s intermission. On July 28 and 29, historical re-enacting group Proctor’s Militia of Historic Hanna’s Town will join the exploits on the hillside.

Performance are at 7 p.m. July 13-15, 20-22 and 27-29.

General admission is $15, with discounts for students, military or age 65 and older.
