First-timers get wins in BRR 2K
Tim Flynn and Emily Lamb had never competed in the Butler Road Race before Saturday.
Consider them undefeated.
Flynn, 24, of Gibsonia, and Lamb, 24, of Parkesburg were the respective winners of the 2k portion of the 43rd annual event.
“I was looking for some place to race this weekend and this was nearby,” said Flynn, a Norwin High School graduate who recently moved to Gibsonia. It's a nice course, a nice event.”
Flynn broke the tape 31 seconds in front of runner-up Nick Gentile. Rob Reichenbaugh, a former multi-sport athlete at Freeport, finished third.
Flynn belonged to a running club at Penn State University, but did not compete in college.
Lamb competed as a distance runner at Ursinus College near Philadelphia. Now a high school teacher in Nashville, Tenn., she is good friends with Moniteau graduate Krista Snyder, a college teammate and winner of last year's BRR 2k.
“A bunch of us still stay in touch and we get together,” said Lamb, a 2015 Ursinus graduate. “That's why I'm here now. A few of us decided to get together with Krista and run this race.
“I'm surprised I won. I'm not in thyat great of shape.”
Snyder, a 2016 Ursinus graduate who lives in Philadelphia now, said she was one of five teammates running the race.
“It was fun. It's cool that Emily won,” Snyder said. “Maybe we can start making a tradition of this.”
Many runners have. Tom Turner, 62, is a Butler County Sports Hall of Fame member and a 1974 Butler graduate who went on to a stellar swimming career at Syracuse.
Turner ran in his fourth consecutive BRR 2k Saturday, only two months after undergoing back surgery.
“I was unsure if I'd be able to run,” he said. “My time was a minute faster than last year, so I was pretty pleased.
“There was a time I could have swam this distance faster than I'm running it now, but it feels good to get out here.”
Turner said his brother talked him into trying the race a few years ago. Now he runs two miles every other day.
The youngest person in the 158-runner 2k field was 4-year-old Remington Ritenour. The eldest was 77-year-old Antoniette Kroll.
