ADAMS TWP — The Mars School Board will meet Wednesday to adopt the district’s 2018-19 budget.

The special meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the district’s administration office on Route 228, comes after the board delayed a vote on the budget last week.

Board members said new information led them to revisit the budget after approving a tentative spending plan in May. The proposed $48.36 million 2018-19 budget includes a 2.4 mill increase to bridge a $1.5 million deficit. Board members said they anticipated the final budget would look different from the tentative version.

The budget includes new programs, including an updated anti-bullying campaign and improvements to the special education curriculum.

It also includes cuts to staff and programs, including eliminating the middle school football program and a middle school band instructor position. That position has been the topic of discussion at this month’s school board meetings, with dozens of students, parents and alumni speaking out against the move.

Board officials said they would consider all avenues to keeping the position, while also making a decision that meets the needs of students in the district.

The board has until June 30 to approve a final budget.
