The Butler Transit Authority Tuesday agreed to buy new security cameras for the new bus terminal on West New Castle Street in Butler that will replace the existing terminal on East Cunningham Street in September.

Authority board members approved purchasing seven high definition cameras and a recorder with mobile access for $6,187 from 2 Kew Security and Surveillance of Kittanning.

The cameras will be installed before the authority closes the bus terminal on East Cunningham Street and opens a new terminal on West New Castle Street near Washington Street, said John Paul, authority executive director.

The camera system at the existing terminal uses outdated analog technology and would be difficult to move to the new terminal, Paul said. It records on a DVR that has to be updated frequently, he said.

The new system is state of the art and comes with a three-year warranty, he said.

The new terminal will have better access for people with disabilities and more room for buses, he said.

The authority has been renting the existing terminal for at least 25 years and will rent the new terminal, but the rent amount hasn’t been determined, he said. The board will have to approve the lease, he said.
