A wide-load took out the traffic signals at Route 8 and Mercer Road in Center Township.

Wednesday afternoon traffic was moving slowly through the intersection of Route 8 and Mercer Road in Center Township after two tractor-trailers took out power lines for the five traffic signals at the busy crossroads.

A truck pulling an oversized load north on Route 8 hit a signal causing other lines to sag, said Greg Brewster, township street department foreman.

A second truck struck one of the sagging lines when it turned left from Route 8 north to Mercer road, Brewster said.

The accidents didn't cause a power outage, but power to the signals was shut off, he said.

“All the power seems to be working, minus the five lights,” Brewster said.

He said he didn't know when the signals would be fixed.

Traffic Light Systems of Coraopolis, the township's traffic signal contractor, was contacted shortly after the 2:45 p.m. accident to fix the lines and signals, but Brewster said he didn't know when signals would be working again.

State police responded to the mishap and troopers were talking to the drivers.
