Father, son hurt when tossed off ATV
DONEGAL TWP — A 10-year-old boy and his father were hurt Friday afternoon when they were thrown off an all-terrain vehicle that they were riding on East Slippery Rock Road, authorities said.
Jason L. Dunlap, 38, of Chicora and his son were both treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for apparent minor injuries and later released following the accident about 2:10 p.m.
State police said Dunlap was driving a 2007 Honda Foreman TRX 500 west on East Slippery Rock Road, west of Bachman Lane, when a dog ran in front of the vehicle.
He swerved the vehicle toward the eastbound lane but he was unable to avoid hitting the dog, said police Cpl. Greg Bogan. The ATV rolled, throwing Dunlap and his son, who was a passenger, from the vehicle. The ATV landed on its wheels.
“(Dunlap) advised he was going down the road with his son to show a neighbor a turtle that they had caught,” according to a police report, “when the dog just 'appeared right in front of (him).'”
Police said Dunlap would be cited for careless driving. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet. Both were taken to the hospital by private vehicle.
