EVANS CITY — Changes may be coming to borough ordinances in the wake of last month’s water line break which led to a water outage across the borough.

Ed Tanski, Evans City Water and Sewer Authority chairman, gave council an update on the break at Monday’s meeting, saying that the problem was exacerbated by a pool that was built over it, straining the line and making it difficult for crews to access it and make repairs.

“We’re figuring there was probably over 20,000 pounds of water less than 5 feet above that line and the pressure on it and so forth wasn’t helping the issue,” he said. “Plus when we had our equipment and our men in the ditch trying to repair the ditch, the pool started to slide in on us.”

Ultimately, the crews were able to drain and remove the pool and fix the line, but Tanski said they’d prefer not to repeat the experience.

“My request to the borough is to check into your ordinances, if you would, to see if you have a building permit ordinance on pools,” he said. “If you don’t, I would like to suggest you enact an ordinance on it so the water authority can be (involved) in the permit issue (process).”

Tanski added that he is asking for an ordinance only regarding future pools and that current pools should not be affected.

Council President Lee Dyer said the council would look into it.

Council also approved a contract to pave Pittsburgh Street. The council awarded the $37,446.18 contract to Weis Asphalt Paving Inc. The plan had been approved in last month’s meeting but needed council’s approval to officially offer the company the contract.
