Miners drop the Sox
West Virginia’s 4-run fifth inning fueled a 6-4 Prospect League victory over the visiting Butler BlueSox Wednesday night.
Butler starting pitcher Alex Stobert began the fifth on the mound working with a 2-1 lead, but was pulled after one out. He shouldered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out five and walking two.
The Sox pulled to within 5-4 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh frame, but Miners’ reliever Logan Workman got out of the inning and Butler failed to score the rest of the game.
Butler catcher Kellen Sarver was 2-for-4 in the game with a double, a run scored and one batted in.
Sean Kealey worked 2 2/3 innings of relief for the Sox and gave up a run on two hits. Wyatt Daugherty worked a scoreless eighth frame.
Butler (2-5) plays again at West Virginia (5-2) Thursday night.
