Seneca Landfill gets award for gas capture

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Landfill has received a national industry award for its compressed natural gas fueling station at its landfill on Hartmann Road.

The Solid Waste Association of North America recently announced that the Silver Excellence Award in the landfill gas and biogas category will go to Seneca Landfill, which is owned by Vogel Holdings of Adams Township.

The award will be presented Aug. 22 at SWANA's annual conference in Nashville.

Edward R. Vogel, vice president of Vogel Holdings, said the company built the state's first CNG facility with gas captured from the landfill and processed into CNG.

Vogel said the CNG is used to power Vogel Disposal's fleet of trucks, which bring refuse to the landfill where the station was built.

“The CNG station will also be open to the public, which will make the opportunity for fleet conversion to CNG for local haulers and other fleet operators in the area more viable,” Vogel said.

SWANA's Excellence Program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management operations, advancing worker and community health and safety, and implementing successful public education and outreach programs, according to a SWANA press release.
