A Valencia couple pleaded guilty Tuesday to drug charges stemming from the discovery of a marijuana growing operation at their home in 2015.

William E. McIntyre, 69, pleaded guilty to felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and Barbara Ann Witzel, 60, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia before Judge William Shaffer.

The plea agreement for McIntyre calls for 30 months of the Intermediate Punishment Program. with 12 months on house arrest with electronic monitoring, as well as fines and costs, while the agreement for Witzel calls for probation, fines and court costs.

Both are set to be sentenced on July 19. Both remain free on $10,000 unsecured bail.

They were both initially charged with two felony counts of possession with intent and one count of conspiracy, as well as misdemeanor drug and paraphernalia possession, after an investigation by the Butler County Drug Task Force. The remaining charges will be dismissed as part of the plea.

Police filed the charges after a tip on Oct. 3, 2015, that the couple was growing marijuana at their Monks Road home.

Officers said they could smell the odor of marijuana as soon as they got to the front door, and Witzel let officers into the home. Inside, a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was noticed, and a further search eventually turned up a grow room with two hydroponic shelters that contained 12 marijuana plants growing in buckets, documents said. Also in the room were electronic timers connected to five sets of artificial lighting and two power inverters.

Another plant was found in a third-floor office, along with a pair of five-gallon buckets that held “large amounts of dried marijuana.”

Other items found included two large plastic bags containing large amounts of marijuana; small amounts of marijuana in bottles, jars and bags; as well as smoking pipes, grinders, an electronic scale and $1,500 in currency.

In all, documents said, the confiscated marijuana weighed 5.79 pounds.
