BlueSox split pair on road

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Butler BlueSox fought back to tie the game three times Sunday before dropping a 9-8 decision to the West Virginia Miners.

Butler (1-3) scored three times in the sixth inning to knot the game at 5. A run in the seventh tied it at 6 and the BlueSox pushed across two runs in the ninth to square the contest at 8.

Colby Johnson walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth. He moved to third on a Fernando Ortiz single and scored the winning run on an error by the pitcher.

Knoch graduate Cole Shinsky started on the mound for the BlueSox and struggled with control. He worked 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and five runs. Shinsky struck out four, but walked seven.

Slippery Rock University’s Ray Scala doubled and scored in the ninth for the Sox. Evan Webb had a single and two RBI, Andrew Chuba a single and three runs scored.

Knoch graduate Chris Law singled and drove in a run.

The BlueSox picked up their first win of the Prospect League season Saturday, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead. They held on for an 8-7 victory over the Miners.

Chad Coles got the save, striking out a batter for the final out with the tying run at third.

Grant Hannant had two singles, two RBI and scored two runs for the BlueSox. Damian Maglione had a double and two RBI.

Nick Fuchs was the winning pitcher, striking out five and working the first five innings.

The BlueSox host Chillicothe in a 7:05 p.m. game Monday.
