BC3 Cranberry gets update
BUTLER TWP — Fewer summer classes are available Butler County Community College’s Cranberry Township campus because of an $800,000 renovation project scheduled to run from July through October.
Only 29 students, less than half of the 83 who took classes there last summer, were able to enroll because of limited classroom space, Nick Neupauer, BC3 president, said Wednesday following a trustees meeting at the main campus.
“Enrollment is down due to construction,” Neupauer said.
Classes will be held in some classrooms while other rooms are being renovated and work will continue in that manner, Neupauer said. The areas being renovated include the natural science lab, main lobby, restrooms and faculty offices. Cosmetic upgrades such as new carpet, paint, ceilings and lighting are included in the project. About half of the building will be available for classes.
The trustees next meeting June 20 is being held at the Cranberry campus.
The first summer class session is already under way and the second session begins June 20.
Fall enrollment at the Cranberry campus is slightly higher than it was in fall this year. Fall enrollment so far is 114 compared to 111 in fall 2017. Fall sessions begin Aug. 27 and Sept. 24.
Total summer credits are down by 226, from 5,921 last summer to 5,695 this summer, and the total headcount is down by 107 credits, from 1,213 to 1,106.
Total fall credits are up by 1,135, from 14,242 last fall to 15,377 next fall. And the college’s total headcount is up by 106 students, from 1,316 last fall to 1,422 next fall.
In other business, BC3 has purchased 20 Dell Latitude laptop computers at $900 apiece for each of the 16 trustees and four cabinet members.
Neupauer said the trustees will start using the laptops at the September meeting in an effort to save money by using less paper. Meeting agendas and other documents will appear on the laptops.
Paper documents will be used along with the laptops at the September meeting to ease the transition, he said. Paper documents will be provided for the public.
The trustees will not meet in July or August. The same officers will be in place when the trustees meet in September. Ray Steffler was re-elected chairman Wednesday as was Joe Kubit, vice chairman; Jennifer Linn, secretary, and Scott McDowell, treasurer.
