Man pleads guilty to outburst in courtroom outburst case

Kevin A. Brodie

A Slippery Rock man pleaded guilty Monday to disorderly conduct, after being charged following a courtroom outburst in March.

Kevin A. Brodie, 25, pleaded to the misdemeanor charge before District Judge William Fullerton and was sentenced to court costs and a $100 fine.

He was initially charged by the Butler County Sheriff's Office with misdemeanor resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, following his blowup in President Judge Thomas Doerr's courtroom on March 6.

Brodie was in court facing a bench warrant for failing to appear at a previous hearing on charges of misdemeanor possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, when police said he became confrontational, arguing with prosecutors and sheriff's deputies.

Doerr ultimately held Brodie in contempt of court. As deputies attempted to take him into custody Brodie resisted, yelling and screaming about his case. The criminal complaint states that he began screaming profanities at the court and refused to leave the courtroom.

Brodie's objection was that his young daughter was present in the courtroom, and he attempted to pull away from deputies several times, police said.

He was placed in handcuffs after he took a step toward Doerr and was escorted out of the courtroom before continuing his outburst in a secured hallway, which could be heard in the courtroom, police said.

The document states that several other deputies responded and Brodie was escorted to the holding cells, where he went limp and refused to walk.

The child was turned over to county Children and Youth Services personnel, before being turned over to a family member.

Brodie was arraigned on the new charges and bail was set at $5,000, which was later posted and he was released.
