Speedway coming to Butler Twp.
Speedway is planning to build its third gas station and convenience store in Butler County.
Construction of the store on a Hansen Avenue lot the company owns, at the corner of Fairground Hill Road in Butler Township, could start in August.
The lot was three parcels that were consolidated into one and is mostly vacant. The only structure is the vacant Dunbar Community Center, which fronts Fairground Hill Road.
Township commissioners approved a site plan submitted by a contractor for the Enon, Ohio-based Speedway LLC in 2015, but the project didn’t move forward.
Township Zoning Officer Jesse Hines said the contractor told him that construction would begin in August.
A building permit has been approved and the contractor has to pay for it and pick it up to start construction, he said.
“That’s all they have to do,” Hines said.
The 3,900-square-foot store will feature a Speedy Cafe and have seven fuel pumps, including diesel and flex fuel pumps, said Stephanie Griffith, communications manager for Marathon Petroleum Corporation, of Findlay, Ohio, Speedway’s parent company.
She said she did not know when construction would begin or when the store would open.
The store will have about 30 employees and the cafe includes indoor seating, she said.
“You order your food at a kiosk. You can order a panini, a sub,” Griffith said.
The cafe will also offer specialty hot dogs, customizable pizzas, breakfast sandwiches, side dishes and handcrafted beverages such as lattes, mochas, smoothies and frappes, she said.
The store will be the third Speedway in Butler County. The two existing stores are in Zelienople and Harrisville.
