DONEGAL TWP — A battery connected to a charger for a child's toy drone was the apparent cause of a near fire Wednesday night at a home on the 700 block of East Slippery Rock Road, authorities said.

No one was injured and damage was minimal, as firefighters quickly snuffed out the problem.

One of the homeowners called 911 shortly after 9:15 p.m. to report smoke in her two-story home in Donegal Township. She was there with her child, said Cody Craig, chief of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire crews arrived and made their way inside where they found a “light haze” on the second floor.

They also found the suspected source of the smoke in what fire officials described as a secondary living room or kid's play room.

“The battery on the charger was melting the carpet,” Craig said.

The small battery and charger were removed from the house.

Crews also inspected the entire house using a thermal-imaging camera to make sure there was no hidden hot spots in the walls.

Assisting the Chicora VFD were firefighters from East Butler and Petrolia, as well as Sugarcreek Township in Armstrong County.

Crews left 45 minutes after the call and the family was able to return to their home.
