A Valencia woman was sentenced to the county Intermediate Punishment Program Thursday after being charged with drunkenly fleeing from police after an incident that began on Route 228 in Mars on March 11, 2017.

McKenzie L. Scott, 31, was sentenced to five years in the program, with the first 120 days on house arrest with electronic monitoring by President Judge Thomas Doerr. She was also ordered to pay court costs, $1,525 in fines, complete 60 hours of community service, attend a Victim Impact Panel, the Alcohol Highway Safety School and complete any drug and alcohol treatment requirements.

Doerr gave her credit for time served while in intensive outpatient rehabilitation.

Scott previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and DUI.

Adams Township police filed the charges after an officer attempted to pull Scott's vehicle over for an unsecured rear bumper and drifting in the lane. Police said when officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, she looked in her rearview mirror and took off. During the chase, part of the unsecured bumper broke off and dragged on the road.

The chase continued onto Davis Road in Middlesex Township, where another part of the bumper broke loose and the entire bumper was being held by wiring, before the vehicle went off the road at the intersection at Sheldon Road.

Scott was able to regain control of her vehicle and turned onto Davidson Road in Adams Township, according to police reports, before turning onto Good Luck Lane, a dead end road. Police blocked Scott's exit, but she drove into a yard and around a police cruiser, police said.

Scott's Ford then turned onto Davidson Road again heading north, passing vehicles along the way, police said.

After traveling on Sheldon Road and Jones Road, Scott made a sharp left into a driveway on Jones Road, hoping police would not see her, but was blocked in and could not escape.

She then got out of the vehicle and surrendered to police.

Scott told police she “was sorry and had been drinking,” reports state. Two open containers were found in the vehicle and Scott told police she had six drinks.

Scott's attorney, Joseph Pometto, said his client has made “tremendous progress,” and “has really come a long way” after being involved in treatment and therapy.

“She is truly dedicated to being a better person,” he said.

Scott apologized during the proceeding, saying she has had a year and two months sober and wants “to appreciate life and not take it for granted.”

“These were poor decisions, and I will continue to keep going down a good path,” she said.

Editor’s Note: June 22, 2016Following a postsentence motion to modify the sentence, President Judge Thomas Doerr ordered on June 6 that the May 3 sentence on the DUI charge be changed to 90 days house arrest with electronic monitoring. All other provisions of the sentence, including the five years in the Intermediate Punishment Program remained the same.
