12-year-old scores ace
ADAMS TWP — In one respect, Alex Schumann's golf game is ahead of the curve — way ahead.
The Adams Township resident scored a hole-in-one on Treesdale Golf Club's Orchard Course April 21. At just 12 years old, he is one of the youngest to ever accomplish the feat at the course.
Treesdale is located across the road from the Schumann residence.
“My dad is a member there and I golf there quite often, at least once or twice per week,” Alex said.
But never had he walked away with a smile as big as after he used a 6-iron to ace the 86-yard No. 3 hole.
“It had a front-left pin location and his ball was tracking well toward the hole and I said, “Alex, that has a chance,'” said Tracy Schumann, Alex's father. “It took two hops and went right in the cup. We saw the whole thing. It was pretty cool.
“There was nobody playing in front or behind us. We started celebrating. I gave him a high-5 and threw him up in the air.”
Two groundskeepers saw Alex's shot, went to the green and confirmed the ace, saying, “Yep, it's in.”
“It was awesome,” exclaimed Alex. “I was jumping up and down and screaming. It was a pretty memorable moment.”
Tracy Schumann got Alex involved in golf six years ago.
“I had to go out a few times before I really started to enjoy it,” said Alex, a sixth-grade student in the Mars Area School District. “There were some things about the game that I just didn't understand.
“But I love it now. It's a game you can play, no matter how old you are. I like golfing with my dad and going to the driving range with my friends.”
Tracy has also introduced his younger son, Maddox, to the sport.
“I love spending time with them out on the course,” he said.
Golf is sure to provide Alex Schumann with many more thrills and, like all who test their skills on the links, some frustrating moments. But he already has a story that will undoubtedly be told again and again.
“I've been golfing for almost 20 years and am still looking for my first hole-in-one and will probably never get it,” Tracy said. “Alex's was the first one I saw in person and as a dad, it was a very proud moment for me. It was unbelievable.”
